SESSION I SCHEDULE

Monday and Tuesday 5/23 and 5/24 and Tuesday 5/31 and Wednesday 6/1

The pandemic has impacted the ability to safely deliver and confidently schedule in-person trainings. Therefore, the Center for Crime Victim Services transitioned Session I of our Victim Assistance Academy to an on-line format. This new world of virtual education conveys information to the participants in asynchronous (independent study) and synchronous (groups, Zoom, blogs, etc.) formats. We are grateful for the experienced mentors, our Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) who will make this a great experience!

The two-week format will give the participants time between the presentations and group work to review any (asynchronous) materials and complete any homework assignments.

Content and Trainers for Session One

Monday May 23rd -The Criminal Justice Continuum in Vermont

  • 9:00-9:10: Welcome: Jennifer Poehlmann, Executive Director, Vermont Center for Crime Victim Services
  • 9:10-9:25: Introduction and Expectations: Samantha Talbot, Center for Crime Victim Services
    • CCVS-Homework Assignment: Participants will be assigned to break-out rooms of 4-6 people. Teams will be asked an ice breaker question. Then the teams will be assigned to a case that involves a person to whom criminal victimization has occurred. Teams will be asked to consider the ways they can assist the (hypothetical) client/survivor/victim as they go through the Academy. On the last day 6/1/22 participants will be asked to:
  • Illustrate the path that the client/victim/survivor took in the justice system based on what they’ve learned though the Academy.
  • Show which wrap-around resources that the victim was able to use. Based on resources they learned in the Academy, and resources that they researched themselves.
  • Teams will share their thoughts on the last day of the Academy.
  • 9:25-9:30: Welcome to the World of Victim Services: Senator Patrick Leahy
  • 9:30-10:15: An Introduction to the Criminal Justice System in Vermont: Meghan Place, Advocate, Jena Santa Maria, Director of Victim Services, Department of Corrections
  • 10:15-11:30: Community Based vs. State Based Advocates with a Panel of Experts-Tammy Loveland, Bennington State’s Attorney’s Office, Sharon Norton, Domestic Violence Specialist, VT Department for Children and Families, Vicki Sterling, Executive Director, Women’s Freedom Center
  • 11:30-12:30: BREAK
  • 12:30-1:30 Victim Services at the Department of Corrections and the VAN (Vermont Automated Notification) Service: Jena Santa Maria, Meghan Place, Lucinda Eckrote, Ashley Fisk, and Danielle Lavesque
  • 1:30-2:30 Incidents of Crime in Vermont: Crime Research Group: Megan Novak, Research Associate
  • 2:30-3:30 Reflections: Overview of asynchronous content to be reviewed over the next week.
